Scope
This document specifies the general conditions and methods for testing samples in condensed water with high concentrations of sulfur dioxide in alternating climates, especially for sulfur dioxide concentrations not included in GB/T9789-2008, so that when testing in different laboratories, Comparable test results can be obtained. This document is intended for use in determining the suitability of products and the materials used in them for use in chemically aggressive environmental conditions. The content of this document does not include the analysis and evaluation of sample shape, sample preparation and test results. Regarding the regulations in these aspects, you can refer to relevant standards or negotiate according to specific circumstances. This test cannot be used directly for comparison of corrosion resistance, unless the application environment of the corrosion protection system is similar. Because the corrosion test conditions are very different from the actual application conditions, the corrosion process and corrosion mechanism are different.
Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

GB/T2423.33-2021 specifies the test method in an alternating climate of condensed water containing high concentration of sulfur dioxide, which is suitable for evaluating the adaptability of products and materials in chemically corrosive environments. Compared with the 2005 version, the main technical changes include:

Key requirements for test equipment

The standard clearly specifies the test chamber:

  • When the volume is 300L, it is necessary to maintain 2L of water
  • Temperature control accuracy is ±3℃
  • Relative humidity in the first stage is 100% (condensed water is generated)
  • Corrosion effect inspection requires a weight loss per unit area of 100-150g/m²

Application case: wind power equipment testing

An offshore wind power converter uses Kca2 test (0.67%SO₂), after 10 cycles of testing:

  1. Corrosion spots of 3mm² appeared on the shell coating
  2. Conductivity of the terminal decreased by 12%
  3. According to GB/T16545-2015, the corrosion products were removed and the material was confirmed to meet the standards

Implementation suggestions

1. Sample preparation

Strictly follow the requirements of Appendix B:

  • Main sample size 100×50×(0.6-1.5)mm
  • Blank sample size 400×250×1mm
  • After degreasing, it is necessary to weigh with a precision of 1mg

Critical Control Points:

  1. SO₂ gas should be introduced in a concentrated manner at the beginning of the test
  2. The second stage needs to complete cooling and ventilation within 1.5 hours
  3. The intermediate test should be completed within 3 hours before the end of the cycle

3. Result Determination

Recommended combination:

  • Mass loss rate (Appendix B requirements)
  • Appearance changes (GB/T9789-2008)
  • Electrical performance attenuation value (product specification)
