Scope
This document specifies the method outline, test equipment and facilities, sample preparation, odor release and sample collection, odor evaluation team, odor test method and test report for testing the odor release of building materials products using the environmental test chamber method. This document is applicable to the odor release test of building materials products such as wood-based panels and their products, coatings, adhesives, insulation materials and products, flooring materials, wallpapers/wall cloths, and sports venue materials.
Introduction

Analysis of the core content of the standard

This standard establishes a complete building material odor test system, which simulates the actual use environment through the environmental test chamber to systematically evaluate the odor release characteristics of six major building materials such as artificial boards and coatings. The test items include six key indicators such as odor intensity, concentration, and dissipation time.

Key Equipment Specifications

Environmental test chamber must meet the requirements of JJF (Building Materials) 182-2021, and the background odor intensity must be ≤0.5 level. PVF/PET material is recommended for sample containers, and the adsorption rate must be <20%. The gas flow rate of the dynamic dilution olfactometer should be stable at (20±1)L/min.

Implementation points

Typical problem solutions

Case: The PD value of a certain brand of wooden flooring was exceeded in the test. After investigation, it was found that the load rate (1.0m²/m³) was not controlled according to the requirements of Appendix C during sample preparation. After re-sampling, the data met the standard.

Operational recommendations

  • Odor assessors must pass the basic olfactory screening in Appendix E
  • Perfumes and other interfering substances are prohibited 72 hours before the test
  • The test must be completed within 6 hours after sample collection

Technology evolution analysis

This standard introduces the dynamic dilution olfactometer for the first time to quantify odor concentration. Compared with the old sensory evaluation method, the data repeatability is improved by 40%. With reference to the ISO 16000-28 international standard, an acetone reference gas calibration system is added.
